On first and second order symmetric factorization methods for the solution of elliptic difference equations

Second order and "almost" second order symmetric factorization methods for the solution of elliptic difference equations are studied. Results from numerical experiments are presented and comparisons are made with the so called Stone's symmetric method, see [1] and [4], and with the first order factorization methods in [3].
