This is not meant to imply unnecessary cost or waste. What is implied, is that highly sophisticated products of extreme technical complexity with high reliability of operation have been high in cost. As the aerospace industry expanded and matured, the "exotic" became commonplace, the hostile environment was found to be not too troublesome, and complexity and high reliability became almost routine. With these changes came concommitant cost reductions in the product primarily engendered by reduced sophistication and more economical methods of development, fabrication and test.
