THE ENERGY BALANCE IN A VORTEX TRAIL

An attempt is made to show, by means of a partial and very approximate analysis, that the energy balance is capable of providing one more relationship linking vortex trails with the bodies that cause them. This consideration is especially important in connection with vibrating bodies which may be subject to excitation or damping due to the flow. A small amount of experimental data is compared qualitatively with the predicted relationship. Additional experimental evidence is expected shortly which may provide guidance for a further refinement of the analysis.
