摘要

The feasibility of combining major experiment instruments with smaller ones (Add-ons) to produce multidisciplinary Spacelab mission payloads suitable for flight within one or two years of the First Spacelab Payload (FSLP) was studied. Some thirteen payload options covering five Spacelab configurations were identified and from these two payloads were carried forward for detail analysis. Both short module plus three pallet configurations, they relate to atmospheric physics and astronomy disciplines. The payloads were evolved to maximize scientific return within Spacelab and orbiter constraints and the payload specialist, power, energy and data assembly, integration and test programs of these model payloads were drawn up against a one year post FSLP flight date. This formed the basis for the assessment of mission dependent costs for the atmospheric physics payload. The feasibility of creating related discipline payloads was established and the typical problems associated with their realization analyzed.
