The results of an investigation carried out to establish the feasibility of an antenna system for an experimental TV broadcast satellite application are described. The antenna is intended to generate a circularly polarized beam of elliptical cross section and high degree of polarization purity. The research described is concerned with the feasibility of realizing such a performance employing an elliptically contoured offset Cassegrain reflector system in conjunction with a circularly polarized corrugated rectangular horn feed. Experimental and theoretical results are presented for the radiation pattern characteristics of an elliptically contoured reflector system used in conjunction with linearly polarized and circularly polarized primary feed elements. Attention is then given to the performance and the limitations of the corrugated rectangular horn operated in circular polarization.
