A one dimensional computation method for the design of a centrifugal compressor which takes into account various real flow effects, such as flow separation in the impeller, jet-wake mixing in the vaneless space, transonic vaned diffuser performance, and diffuser outlet dump diffusion, is discussed. Several numerical examples are worked out in detail to show the influence of different important geometrical and aerodynamical parameters on the compressor performances. This approach is the one used for the VKI computer program COMRAD. The equations used in the program are elucidated.
