The detection of reflected radiation by a remote sensor and the influence of the atmosphere as radiative transfer medium are described. The reflectance behavior of green crops is analyzed after the introduction of the optical characteristics of plant leaves and the soil background. Two deterministic canopy reflectance models are compared. A possible approach is proposed to correlate changing plant canopy parameters with changing reflectance values in only three spectral bands. Model simulations are used to demonstrate a systematic change of multispectral reflectance data during crop growth. Crop monitoring parameters, derived from three spectral bands, are defined. These parameters are sensitive to growth indicators. Ground based reflectance measurements are used to illustrate the dynamic behavior of several crop monitoring parameters, as predicted by model simulations.
