A performance evaluation method for the preburner of staged combustion cycle engines is proposed. Consideration of the turbopump power balance of a staged combustion cycle engine shows that improvements in staged combustion cycle engine performance can be attained by an increase in parameter A, which is related to the discharge pressure of the turbopump. Preburner performance is traditionally evaluated by means of C* efficiency and the spatial deviation of temperature. A working index of the preburner is defined and used as a preburner performance evaluation index. The index is defined as the ratio of the turbine power of the actual preburner gas to the turbine power of the ideal preburner gas. The index is shown to reflect a variation of the parameter A. A method to experimentally determine the index is also discussed.
