Influence of Mechanical Damage on Transmission Pipeline Integrity

Dent and gouge, and plain dent studies of gas pipelines are reviewed. A failure relationship which allows the tolerance of any combination of denting and gouging to be assessed was defined. Plain dents of depth up to 24% of the pipe diameter have no effect on pipeline integrity. Dents with associated defects are subject to time dependent behavior in that failure can occur with sustained pressures of 85% of the straight-off failure pressure.
