Thin Layer Activation: A New Plant Corrosion-Monitoring Technique

The first results from plant scale demonstrations or thin layer activation (TLA) are reported. The basis of the technique is to introduce a small quantity of radioisotope tracer into the surface of a coupon or plant component of interest. Material lost by corrosion or other processes can than be monitored remotely and with high sensitivity. TLA is already well established as a technique possessing unique advantages in the measurement of wear and erosion, particularly in oil and automobile industry research laboratories. The industrial scale demonstrations reported bear witness to its utility as a technique for on-line corrosion monitoring.
