Lignin of the Lower Plants. 4: Isolation and Investigation of the Lignin of Algae

G.L. Stadnikov has obtained nonhydrolyzable substances from the algae Laminaria digitata, L. japonica and Fucus vesiculosus in the amounts 7, 10 and 19% with carbon contents of 53, 62 and 61% respectively and very low methoxyl content. By analysis of these results and of a series of other works, it is concluded that lignin enters into the plant substance at all stages in the evolutionary tree up to unicellular algae, during which its contents increased so far as to serve in the organization of the plant.
