Comportamiento de Grasas Lubricantes a Baja Temperatura (The Low Temperature Behavior of Lubricant Greases)

The influence of the mineral or synthetic base-oil, the thickener, either lithium or calcium soap, and the inorganic thickener on the behavior of lubricant greases at temperatures between 0 and -73 C is determined. The composition and characteristics of 14 grease samples are detailed. The experimental set up includes the measuring of the start up torque and the torque after 1 hour on roller bearings rotating at 1 rpm and exposed to the test temperature. The best performance is obtained using greases with an ester type synthetic oil base, and within those, the esters with a lower freezing point. The use of mineral oil freeze point depressors has no effect on the grease performance.
