A buoyancy-extended version of the k-W model of turbulence which predicts two-dimensional turbulent buoyant surface jets with stable stratification is described. Differential transport equations are solved for the turbulent kinetic energy and the mean square of the vorticity fluctuations. The model uses a modified form of the vorticity-fluctuations equation, wherein the dissipation term is made a function of the local flux Richardson number. The algebraic-stress/flux-model approach is used to account for the reduction of the vertical turbulent transport of heat and momentum by stable stratification. The turbulence model is applied to the calculation of horizontal buoyant surface jets. Results agree with experimental data.
