A linear friction and a dynamic mix problem in two-phase flow were solved by the van Leer and a fully implicit method. The van Leer method was implemented as an attachment to the PHOENICS computer code. For the linear problem, the second order Van Leer method gives a significant reduction in numerical diffusion over a fully implicit upwind scheme, and a first order explicit method. The linear friction test problem is well suited to the Van Leer method as the analytical volume fraction profile is nearly linear. The dynamic problem shows that numerical diffusion may be reduced in problems where the volume fraction profile is not linear. The second order van Leer scheme is recommended for the solution of one-dimensional volume fraction equations.
