Some Aspects of the Design of a Fly-by-Wire Flying Control System for a Supersonic V/STOL Fighter Aircraft

Results of a student group project to design the flight control system of a supersonic vertical takeoff fighter aircraft are summarized. The original design is evaluated in terms of safety, mission reliabililty, and maintenance reliablity. Subsequent work concentrated on the investigation of the rudder pedal control systems in the cockpit with detailed design of the preferred scheme. The final phase of work concerned the design of the roll reaction control nozzle. The system evaluation showed the vital importance of adequate reliability calculations early in the design process. It also gave a good insight into how the system really works and how it might fail.
