An adaptive control concept for translational hydraulic drives, which can be realized in real time using a microcomputer is described. The hydraulic drive consists of an hydraulic cylinder and a servovalve. Two methods for the synthesis of hydraulic drive control systems are presented. The applicability of the concept was tested using digital simulation. It is shown that the very good control behavior can be obtained. The controller adjusts itself automatically during the start-up phase, and adapts to the nonlinearities of the system. However, the controller in its proposed form can practically not be used for real drives. Therefore, a modified adaptive control concept robust enough for technical applications was proposed and was demonstrated to be suitable.
