Scalar-Equation Method for the Prediction of Free-Surface Flows

The scalar-equation method for the simulation of free-surface flows, and use of the Van Leer convection method in approximating the fluxes of a scalar across grid cells are described. Solutions of two test problems, one concerning the movement of a straight interface, the other concerning the collapse of water columns, by means of the scalar-equation method, are compared with those from other theoretical analyses, experimental investigation, and numerical prediction. The implementation of the Van Leer method as an alternative to the method built into PHOENICS-84 for solving the scalar equation is outlined.
