A high performance, general purpose processor was designed, using various technology independent methods. The internal processor structure (register - transfer structure) was adjusted to the processor's application. The kernel of an operating system and frequently used PASCAL statements were used to model typical demands for a general purpose processor. Execution time and hardware costs were optimized. A horizontal microprogram offers an optimal adjustment. The parallel execution of several assignments per instruction increases performance. The use of multiport memories and several functional units allows the execution of very complex assignments in a single cycle. The processor is asynchronously controlled by the flow of tokens which accompany all data. Each register-transfer module contains an interface acting like a Petri-net transition. .
