Digital signal processing application specific VLSI circuits were studied through the example of convolution, chosen as central to the whole field of signal theory. Classical and nonclassical linear convolution architectures are presented, emphasizing formal description and the area-throughput tradeoff attainable with pipelining. Alternative architectures using Winograd and number theoretic transforms are assessed. Examples of circuit design for European satellite radio broadcasting are given. The circuits, implemented with interpolation tap filters, are a noise spectrum shaping sound channel coder, realized as a 2 micron CMOS 25000 transistor circuit and a luminance-chrominance sampling rate converter realized as a prototype in 3 microns NMOS, and generated using a silicon compilation language.
