The use of quartz crystals as filtering mass monitoring devices was investigated. The irradiation of quartz crystals 100 micrometers thick with heavy ions causes serious damage of the crystal along the irradiation path. By etching these quartzes with KOH as example, pores with adjustable diameters are obtained. The use of these quartzes for filtering mass monitoring shows a reduced Q-factor compared to untreated quartz; nevertheless they can be employed as oscillators. Their moisture sensitivity and temperature coefficients are similar to those of normal quartzes. Their typical mass response is 1Hz/ng/sqcm. The pores have a funnel shape; hence, cascading for the measurement of aerosol mass size distributions is difficult.
