Potentialities for an Improvement of the Efficiency of Fluorescent Mercury Lamps

A Knudsen cell-mass spectrometer system was designed and mounted to study the evaporation rates of mercury amalgam and their application to lamp efficiency improvement. With this instrument the evaporation of the compounds HgMg, Hg2Mg, Hg3Mg5, HgMg2, Hg2Mg5, and HgMg3 as well as of the alloys Hg1-In4-Mg1 was studied after appropriate samples were prepared and characterized. Hg-vapor pressures, reactions of evaporation, and thermodynamic functions are given. Results indicate that at least some of the alloys can be used in lamps.
