The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and the Linear Spread Function (LSF) for the LANDSAT-5 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM) systems are determined. A theoretical model for the optical, detector, and electronic components of the TM and MSS sensors based on the project specification is used. Sampling effects, such as aliasing and sampling uncertainty that affect the spatial resolution, are also included in the model. As illustrated, the MTF of the TM system, for the bands 1-4, is analyzed. It is observed that the effective IFOV is significantly larger than the accepted common value, particularly in the along-track direction, where undersampling contributes markedly to an increase in image blur. The results are very similar to experimental results published in other papers.
