Starting from the weak formulation of the contact problem it is shown that in a number of technologically important cases, such as wheel-rail contact in railroads, and the contacts in roller bearings, the contact formation is independent of the tangential traction. An algorithm for contact formation and one for friction which lead to a solution in a finite number of steps were developed. They were implemented for the elastic half-space, and the computer program is reliable. An amalgamation of the contact formation and the friction algorithms was also implemented. This method, however, does not converge in all possible cases. Contact evolutions, notably steady state rolling, are discussed.
