The development of a materials testing procedure in nonlinear fracture mechanics is discussed. The definitions of crack initiation are explained, and the different test methods are presented. A uniform fracture mechanics test standard is considered. The procedure is based on the multiple specimen method and uses bending and tensile specimens. The J and delta evaluation formulas and their domain of validity are presented. The proposed procedure describes the determination of three crack initiation parameters used for materials characterization or for the evaluation of components.
