A bibliographic study of the empirical formulae giving estimates for the heat transfer coefficient is presented. The different corresponding measuring techniques are discussed and a method to measure the local heat flux densities in the cylinder head is proposed. The fluxmeters are composed of differentially mounted thermocouples embedded in cones of the same wall material. It is shown that the minimum heat flux density occurs at mid stroke position. The heat flux densities in the cylinder head are four times higher than those in the sleeve. Correlation formulae for the local and global thermal densities are obtained as function of the fuel mass flow rate, the air density and the engine speed.
