Model Building for an Ingot Heating Process: Physical Modeling Approach and Identification Approach

The model building for steel ingot thermal behavior is considered. The variables taken into account are the furnace temperature and the ingot central core temperature, and sometimes the surface temperature. The purpose is to build a simple dynamical model in order to predict the central temperature. The physical modeling is performed using heat transmission theory. Black-box identification is used to determine models based on the experimental data. Experimental test data are used to examine the qualities of models from both methods. The two methods are compared. The steel ingot heating model obtained by system identification gives better estimation of the characteristics and higher precision than model-building using physical laws. The advantage of model-building from physics is that it gives insight; also the different parameters and variables have physical interpretations. But it may be difficult and time consuming to build the model from first principles.
