摘要

It is argued that continuous bitstream and stream oriented protocol functions should be used in the design of integrated services digital networks. Voice and video applications require a connection-oriented global network service. For voice applications, the transfer delay should not exceed 80 msec. The transfer delay does not need to be a fixed value. Data should be kept in sequence by the global network provider. A voice connection requires a fixed throughput of 64 kbit/sec, a video connection requires a fixed throughout of 2 Mbit/sec. Subnetworks to be interconnected may provide a connection-oriented, or a connectionless service: FDDI II and ISDN (basic access and primary rate) both provide a connection-oriented service; FDDI I and BWN are examples of subnetworks that provide a connectionless service. In all cases, the transfer delay of the subnetworks should have a guaranteed upper bound. Existing internet protocols, designed to support voice, video and data applications, are not known. Existing internet protocols, designed for data applications, are not suited for voice and video applications for reasons of efficiency.
