A waveguide voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) was designed for use in the 26GHz to 40 GHz range. The VCO uses a novel approach involving a double radial line concept to provide tuning bandwidths in excess of 3 GHz at these frequencies. The system was modelled via an equivalent circuit and the various parameters influencing performance, particularly the tuning range, were analyzed. Software simulation of the system was developed to predict the behavior of the circuit. The simulation package allows for verification of assumptions made during the development of the equivalent circuit. Results obtained from the simulation are in agreement with those obtained experimentally. The simulation also verified that the Gunn diode capacitance and resistance exist within a certain known range. Their exact values must be determined empirically.
