The downlink phase shift keying system, part of the SATCOM project, was simulatedby a computer model. The installation procedure, including data backup and retrieval, for the computer program is presented. Using the SPW (Signal Processing WorkSystem) simulation tool, the performance of the system is evaluated under additive white Gaussian noise, with Rayleigh fading, and with enhancement through coding (notably convolutional encoding and Viterbi decoding) and convolutional interleaving. In the Rayleigh fading simulation, the scintillation effect is introduced into the channel, and the steps used to design the digital filter that introduces this effect are provided. For each simulation, the block diagram of the evaluated system is given as it is used in SPW. Results are compared with theoretical performance and shown graphically. Source file program listings are also included. The main finding is that the simulation results agree with the theoretical and confirm those simulations performed independently by the Raytheon Company, with the exception of soft-decoding phase shift keying, for which both the SPW and Raytheon simulations produce probabilities of error that exceed the theoretical upper bound.
