Histogramming Tool Set with Application to Visualization of CFD Data Sets

A set of tools have been written for the creation and display of histograms. These tools were tailored for use on Plot3D data sets, but may be easily extended to other types of data. Data histograms have a long history of use by statisticians and more recently in image processing. Histograms give a good quick look at the distribution of data values. The relevant use in visualization of CFD data is similar to the use in image processing; knowing more about the data distribution allows a more informed choice of visualization enhancements. In particular, the assignment of pseudocolors, the thresholds for transitions between colors and other similar visual parameters can be selected more effectively. This work describes the tools to generate the histograms, their use, examples of the results created, and some suggestions for how the results might be employed.
