Lambek Grammar: An Information-Based Categorical Grammar

Lambek Grammar (LG) is presented and partially illustrated. LG is a nondirectedcategorical grammar in which string generation and type combination are intimately connected in that it is one process which combines types and generates strings. The grammar is specifically designed for the regulated transmission of 'grammatical' information between semantical types and strings. LG contains principles guiding the transmission of information from the semantical types into the strings, and contains principles regulating the flow of information from the strings into the semantic types themselves. An intrinsic motivation therefore holds for setting up LG, since it is believed that this system is a convenient vehicle for the representation of temporal meaning. An initial orientation of the advantages of LG is offered by example of its practical utility: the use of LG to overcome the linguistic infelicity of the nondirected Lambek calculus.
