A dynamometer-stand investigation was conducted to determine the effect of exhaust pressure on the performance of an 18-cylinder air-cooled, radial engine equipped with a conventional exhaust col¬lector ring. The investigation covered a range of engine speeds from 1400 to 2600 rpm, inlet-manifold pressures from 30 to 50 inches of mercury absolute, fuel-air ratios of 0.063, 0.069, 0.08.5, and 0.100, and spark settings of 20° and 35° B.T.C. The exhaust pres¬sure was varied, in general, from approximately 6 inches of mercury absolute to about 20 inches of mercury above the inlet-manifold pressure.
