A Solution of the Laminar Boundary-Layer Equation for Retarded Flow

The laminar boundary-layer equation, for a linearly retarded velocity in the main stream, U = 1 — 1/8 in reduced variables, has been solved numerically by working in finite intervals in x, with a correction for the finite length of x-interval. The method was first tried out on the region near the forward stagnation point, where the results could be checked from tables given by Howarth, and proved very satisfactory. The separation point has been determined by two independent methods to be close to x = 0.959, in excellent agreement with Howarth's value. The nature of the singularity at the separation point is discussed.
