Pressure Measurements on Two Propeller Blade Roots

The pressure distributions at three sections of two propeller blade roots have been measured with the blades fixed in front of a Hercules XI nacelle, and also in the free stream, to obtain information on the effect of the pressure gradient due to the cowl entry on the characteristics of the blade root sections.n,It is concluded that (1) the L/D ratio is appreciably worsened by the cowl pressure gradient;(2) a considerable amount of the loss of total head at the cowl entry arises independently of the blade roots and is due to breakaway on the spinner.
