An Analysis of some Abnormal Developments of the Thrown Line Type in Paratroop Parachute Equipment

An analysis has been made of about 50 cases of abnormal parachute developments of the thrown line variety. The motions of the paratroop and bag in those cases where the thrown line occurs are discussed as also is the development of the canopy in this state" The motions tending to produce the thrown line are somersaulting of the man and late bag twists. It is considered that whereas a reduction of somersaulting can be obtained, elimination of the bag twist would be very difficult. Another method of attacking the problem is to improve the opening qualities of the parachute and further information is being sought to find out the properties of the equipment required to do this.
