Manual and semi-automatic ultrasonic wrenches for tightening flared tubing connections for tubing sizes ranging from 0.3l8-centimeter (0.125-inch) to 2.54-centimeter (1.0 inch) diameter were designed and fabricated.nUltrasonic activation of the wrench head during torquing increased the percentage of leaktight assemblies of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy components by an average of 73 percent and of ORES 304 stainless steel components by 26 percent, without increasing the applied torque.nA modified ultrasonic wrench design of lighter weight construction and lower manufacturing costs was proposed, and the fabrication of two wrench sizes for the flared tubing size range of interest was recommended.
