TUBE CONNECTOR WITH SUPER FINISHED SEAL

It had been shown in earlier studies (Reference 2) that sealing between two metal surfaces can be obtained without yielding, provided that the surfaces are extremely flat and smooth. Typical requirements on the surfaces are flatness within 10 microinches over the entire seal area and the absence of any scratches or other local defects with a depth larger than 1/2 micro inch. This combination of extreme flatness and smoothness is very difficult to obtain. Of a number of tested manufacturers, only Jones Optical Works Burlington, Massachusetts, and UP-HI Company, Limited, Tokyo, Japan, were able to deliver surfaces which met the requirements. All super finished surfaces for the connector described in this report were made by Jones Optical Works. Characteristic for the super finished seal is that the surfaces are never pressed together so hard that they yield. Therefore the surface damage is very low, and the surfaces can be re-used several times.
