SUBSTORM EVENTS Proceedings of an ESRO Colloquium held in Kiruna, Sweden, 18-20 March 1969

Magnetospheric substorms, polar magnetic substorms and the substorm aspects of magnetic pulsations and of auroral absorption and other effects of the upper part of the auroral particle spectrum are reviewed.-Contributions by discussion leaders and participants concerning the following topics are presented :optical, magnetic, magnetic pulsation, VLF emission, absorption, auroral ionization drift and auroral back- . scatter measurements on the ground;balloon measurements of electron precipitation;optical measurements with rockets;rocket and satellite measurements of electric fields and high latitude particle precipitation and Langmuir probe plasma measurements. Early results obtained with the ESRO I/Aurorae satellite are discussed and details are given of the ESRO Geostationary Satellite project. — Recommendations made by Working Groups on the Distribution of Ground Stations, the Geostationary Satellite and other Magnetospheric Satellite Projects, Auroral Absorption Substorms, Special Events and the Dynamics of the Polar Region are also given.
