Heat treatment studies of aluminium alloy type 7079 forgings

The effects of variations in the heat treatment were studied with regard to various properties. The variations involved duration of solution heat treatment, quench rate, temperature and duration of primary and secondary ageing. The properties comprised short time tensile strength, fatigue endurance, fatigue crack propagation resistance, fracture toughness and stress corrosion resistance* The results can be correlated on the basis of studies reported by Nicholson et al. regarding the effect of heat treatment on microstructure.
