Calculations of electron content variations due to the passage of gravity waves

This study has been continued later by Rao, Lyon and Klobuchar (1969). They proposed that the observed variations of the electron content are due to acoustic gravity waves. It must be remembered that the wave characteristics which resulted from the above triangulation method were obtained assuming a single disturbance height. Model calculations of TID:s (Hooke, 1968;Lusaka, 1970) show, however, that the disturbance in the electron density extends over a very large range of heights around the F-2 peak. The position of the maximum deviation of the electron density from its undisturbed value varies also with the height. Due to these facts, fluctuations in the electron content produced by the TID:s when viewed by orbiting beacon satellites will show strong dependence on the geometrical configuration of the observer and the satellite orbit with respect to the direction of propagation of the gravity wave and horizontal gradients.nIt is difficult to show this dependence analytically, without too many simplifying
