THE FREE VIBRATIONS OF AN ELASTICALLY MOUNTED RIGID BODY

Frequency equations are set up and solved for the free vibrations of a rigid body mounted on an elastic suspension. Several special cases, as well as the most general case, are considered in detail. Results are presented in the form of directly applicable formulae, graphs and charts. The special cases include: plane vibrations with simple and with double coupling, anti-plane vibrations, vibrations of axially oriented and of concentric systems. Particular attention is given to the normal modes of vibration, and some simple graphical constructions are described which help visualize these modes. Numerical examples illustrate the application of the formulae. The effects of damping in this type of system are also considered.
