The possibilities for television transmission over a channel with 1 MHz bandwidth are discussed and applications to closed circuit TV are mentioned. Problems such as the effective bandwidth requirement for a given TV standard, pulse response of a signal channel of limited bandwidth, and picture quality and its grading are dealt with. For a given bandwidth of 1 MHz two solutions to the problems are presented as a laboratory simulation: (a) restricted bandwidth transmission of signals using the TV broadcasting standard (625 lines/50 Hz), and (b) transmission using a standard proposed for videophone use (267 lines/60 Hz). The screen photographs presented lead to the assumption that 1 MHz bandwidth TV transmissions supply sufficient information to be of practical use for a number of applications.
