Radioisotope production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory--past, present, and future.

Radioisotopes of significant value to research, medicine, and industry have been successfully produced at ORNL for many years, using a variety of reactors and hot cell facilities. Plans are for continued production. The ANS and Melton Valley facilities are planned for 21st century operation. Significant issues must be resolved to enable continued operation: stabilized and sufficient funding; appropriate regulation of facility operation and transportation of radioactive materials; and integrated planning and provision for waste treatment, storage, and disposal. 6 figs, 2 tabs.
