摘要

Lightweight structural materials offer great promise and simultaneously unresolved hurtles to achieving wide spread usage in transportation systems. While structurally AI, Mg, Ti, and polymeric composites can facilitate significant weight savings in structural applications across a spectrum of automotive applications, barriers remain to their being the uniformly preferred materials of choice due to cost, fabrication difficulties, as well as performance trade-offs. The lack of extensive service performance data as well as predictive capability concerning the dynamic deformation, shock loading, damage evolution, and failure responses of these materials remains a challenge to their utilization in platform and personnel protection applications. In this talk, emphasis will be given to the state-of-the-art of our understanding of the dynamic deformation responses of AI, Mg, Ti, and structural composites with emphasis on the measurement challenges and data needs to support the development of predictive modeling of the dynamic deformation of these materials.
