The thesis considers the energy loss mechanisms that influence an oscillating air bubble generated by a seismic airgun have been considered. A number of experiments with a small airgun in a small water tank have been performed, and parameters such as water temperature and viscosity have been varied. Pressure signatures were measured and the influence of the parameters on the primary-to-bubble ratio and bubble time period have been calculated. In this paper, the authors explains what are the most significant mechanisms for energy loss from the oscillating airgun bubble. Topics of enclosed papers include: temperature effects on airgun signatures; experimental study of viscosity effects on airgun signatures; high speed photography of the bubble generated by an airgun; and holographic studies of the bubble generated by a seismic airgun. In the appendix, airgun modeling, the Rayleigh equation, the Kirkwood-Bethe equation, and thermodynamics of the bubble are discussed. 129 refs., 39 figs., 4 tabs.
