The work dealt with the conversion of HCN into other nitrogen species in a simulated pyrolysis gas consisting of a mixture of methane and oxygen. The conversion was studied as function of both the temperature and the oxygen content, or 'degree of oxidation', DO, of the gas. The purpose was to get some more information on the details of the fuel nitrogen conversion mechanism in fluidized bed combustion systems. It was found that, in the simulated pyrolysis gas consisting of methane and oxygen, HCN decomposed with increasing degree of oxidation. HCN decomposed mainly into NO and NH(sub 3). The yield of NO increased with increasing DO. A weak correlation was also detected for the conversion of HCN into ammonia: with increasing degree of oxidation the yield of NH(sub 3) decreased in many but not all cases studied. Further studies are needed to draw a firm conclusion concerning NH(sub 3). At the DO 0.6, a small amount of N(sub 2)O was also formed. A suggestion of future work would be to investigate the same conversions in other mixtures simulating the pyrolysis gas. Particularly the presence of hydrogen in the gas mixture would be of interest
