摘要

The motivation for convening this engineered barrier performance workshop was to identify and present new information from field studies, monitoring programs, modeling studies and regulatory experiences related to engineered covers and liners related to low-level radioactive waste, decommissioning, and uranium mill tailings. The workshop objectives were: (1) to facilitate communication and exchange of technical and regulatory experiences among selected experts on current engineered barrier issues, including academics, Federal and State staff, and contractors; (2) discuss lessons learned and approaches for monitoring and modeling; preparation of recommendations to address maintenance of engineered barrier performance over time; and (3) identify topics for future research and the potential need to update technical guidance. In particular, the technical issues focused on degradation processes and changing performance of engineered barriers, monitoring (short-term), model support (long-term), and modeling of processes within the barriers, especially engineered surface covers in addition to practical examples of performance failures and successes based on field observations.
