Effects of high ambient density on diesel spray penetration and spread

The effects of ambient gas density on diesel spray penetration and spread under (a) non-vaporizing, (b) vaporizing, and (c) combusting conditions were examined. Densities more than a factor of two higher than top-dead-center conditions in current technology diesel engines were considered. The results show that the effects of density on non-vaporizing spray penetration are more significant than previously noted, that vaporization processes decrease penetration and spread, and that combustion processes increase penetration and spread of diesel sprays.
