Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) Markets: Status and Trends

Solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs) represent the generation attributes of solar energy systems and can be traded separately from commodity electricity. A SREC is created for each megawatt-hour of electricity generated from solar energy systems. SREC markets have emerged in nine U.S. states and Washington, D.C., as a method to meet compliance with solar carve out provisions of renewable energy portfolio standards (RPS). Solar carve out provisions set requirements for solar generation or capacity. This report examines the status and trends of SREC markets.
