For the most part the work supported by this grant has involved study of the spin, isospin, and multipole content of the continuum of nuclei. Most of the work has used polarized (p,p(prime)) or (d,d(prime)) reactions, measuring spin observables to infer properties of the target nuclei. In addition some work has been done using the (p,nx) reaction to study the (Delta) excitation region of the continuum. Publications resulting from this work have included seventeen refereed articles and letters, seventeen abstracts and conference talks, three of which were invited. Experiments included: (sup 12)C(p,p), E=318 MeV; (sup 48)Ca(p,p), E=318 MeV; (sup 40)Ca(p,p), E=800 MeV; (sup 208)Pb(p,p), E=200 MeV; H,(sup 12)C(n,p); (sup 40)Ca(p,p), E=580 MeV; (sup 208)Pb(p,p), E=200 MeV; (sup 12)C(d,d), E(sub d)=400 MeV; (sup 40)Ca(p,p), E=500 MeV; (sup 12)C(p,p), E=800 MeV; (sup 40)Ca(d,d), E(sub d)=400 MeV; (sup 40)Ca(p,p), E(sub p)=318 MeV; (sup 208)Pb(p,p), E(sub p)=200 MeV; (sup 12)C(d,d), E(sub d)=400 MeV; (sup 2)H,(sup 12)C(p,n(pi)), E(sub p)=800 MeV; (sup 12)C(d,d), E(sub d)=600 MeV.
